With help from the Skipper Saver Program, you are going to learn what you need to bring your boat and family safely back to shore if the Skipper is disabled. That could happen. You will be ready. · We know that you have been concerned about the possibility of facing such an emergency. And yet, you may not have found the time or interest to study even the rudiments of boat handling. Or, unfamiliarity with the subject may have made it seem too difficult to master. · The Skipper Saver Program will enable you, in four lessons, to gain enough competence in boat handling to make a safe return. This material covers only essentials, and the content is simple and fundamental. The language avoids technical terms as much as possible, and you will not be asked to turn in homework assignments or take written examination, but you may find it helpful to take notes.
¨ Lesson 1 outlines emergencies that may put you in charge. It describes methods of boat operation in three different situations: At anchor, underway in protected water, and underway in open water. Lesson 2 presents the fundamentals of boat handling and applies them to maneuvering and docking. Your Skipper will encourage and help you to practice these procedures in the family boat. Lesson 3 covers basic operating procedures for the marine radiotelephone with emphasis on how to use it effectively in an emergency. Lesson 4 gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge in the family boat. Completion of the demonstration entitles you to a Certificate of Achievement and a Skipper Saver Patch. Tampa Power Squadron members participate by making land and on the water surveys and reporting discrepancies to NOAA which become Local Notice to Mariners and ultimately, changes to our local charts and other documents. Reports on Small-Craft Facilities (marinas and boat ramps) and Aeronautical Charts are also included in the Cooperative Charting Program. Humans & nature make continuous changes in the information shown on nautical charts, these changes occur so frequently that the National Ocean Service (NOS) relies upon groups such as USPS to keep this information up-to-date and accurate. At the Tampa Power Squadron, this program is very popular! Approximately 4 times per year, members are assigned to "teams" and participate in the following on-the-water or land assignments:
